Stallion Inspections

Stallions aged two and older may be presented for approval at inspection sites around North America. The approval process starts with paperwork, DNA and vet exam, then the official licensing inspection of the stallion which includes presentation in-hand, on the triangle and free schooling, as well as free jumping and on the lunge. Stallions which are far enough in under-saddle training will be also be observed under saddle under their normal training rider. Stallions which receive eligible scores in their licensing inspection will then be expected to complete performance testing – either by completing the North American Stallion Performance Test requirements (two 3-day tests passed in age of 4,5 or 6 for Warmbloods, one 3-day passed for Ponies) or by completing full Performance Results (requirements below).

If you would like to present a stallion for inspection, please email a copy of your stallion’s registration papers/pedigree and any show results to office@westfalfen-na.com to begin the process. We will evaluate your stallion’s pedigree and let you know if he is eligible for the Westfalen stallion books. Then we will send a Vet Exam Form and determine that he has DNA with parentage verification on file with his registry of birth, and if not, we will send a DNA kit.

The following is a general guide to the Stallion Books :

At their initial licensing inspection, stallions will be given eight scores ranging from 1-10 in the following categories:

  • Breed and Sex Type
  • Quality of Conformation
  • Correctness of Conformation and Elasticity of Gaits
  • Walk
  • Trot
  • Canter
  • Free Jumping
  • Overall Impression and Development

All stallions must fulfill Performance Requirements as well, to complete their licensing for Book I. Stallions may be placed into Stud Book II if the Pedigree Requirements for a higher stud book have not been met, if they have an average score of less than 6.0 at their inspection, or if performance requirements are not met.

New Warmblood stallions entering the Westfalen books must also have WFFS (Warmblood Fragile Foal Syndrome) status on file, so a copy of the WFFS status should be sent to the registry along with the copy of the stallion’s papers, or a request for a DNA kit to complete the testing. German Riding Pony stallions have their own Vet Form which must be completed, and DNA parentage verification is also required as well as testing for CA (Cerebellar Abiotrophy), as well as Myotania (if any affected pedigree descending from New Forest stallion Kantje’s Ronaldo exists in the pedigree). Carrier status for the aforementioned genetic conditions does not affect registration status, but must be maintained on file. Finally, we will determine the location of the nearest inspection site which can accommodate stallions, or you can request a private inspection site.
